PAIN POINTS

1.png

The sound quality is not perfect while skiing.

2.png

Mounting and adjusting the speaker is time consuming and hard.

3.png

Designs are usually boring and look alike.

PROBLEM WITH EFFICIENT SOUND ZONE

5degree angle 4-01.jpg

The most efficient sound zone in water skiing mainly depends on:

A. Boat speed which impacts the boat angle

B. The distance between skier and the boat

C. Speakers mounting angle Factor

Factoris very dependent on factorsand B which could vary for different skiers. If factor C is not right, the speaker shoots the sound to water in front of skier and not the skier.

INTRODUCING TOWER X

TECHNICAL FEATURES & THE 5 DEGREE RULE

JBL Tower X is a high performance audio system designed to be easily installed and mount to your boat and be used in harsh marine conditions. An innovative angled grille and speaker design helps for a better and more efficient sound zone while the boat is moving. Due to our research on users and based on the average distance from the boat while skiing, the best speaker angle for the most efficient sound zone outcome  is 5 degrees.

FINAL DESIGN

AESTHETIC DESIGN FEATURES

GRILLE DESIGN

Inspired by the JBL logo’s horn, the grille pattern angle is aligned to the right side of the mark to create harmony.

SIDE VIEW

A dynamic one-piece shell without any parting lines embraces speaker and the grille which gives a cleaner and more aerodynamic look to the product.

TAIL END

Inspired by jet engine turbines, the design of the tail end adds to the dynamic shape of the product and emphasizes the power of the speaker.

RGB LED LIGHTING

RGB LED ambient lighting hidden behind the grille resembles a hot engine which is ready to explode.

Outcome:

In addition of winning Red Dot Design Award, Tower X became the first ever JBL marine tower speaker. However because of its look and performance, giant off-road vehicle producers such as Polaris became interested in using the product on their vehicles which resulted in further negotiations and relationship developments. A lot of design elements from Tower X, later got carried to other JBL aftermarket and semi-OEM products.
